Happy Christmas and all that jazz

Back in Sheffield. Was feeling quite glum last night, what with not having any friends here and having seen all the astro people and all the juggling people far too briefly. Better today though -- I've been reminding myself how fun it is to be a geek by installing ubuntu. And I've made rice pudding in the slow cooker my mum got me for Christmas. And done lots and lots of laundry.

I've been thinking about death a lot recently. I don't like living on my own, it makes me think about dying alone.  And there's no one to distract me from thinking about it.  I don't think you can gain a lot from thinking about dying.  No one wants to, everyone has to -- that's about as far as you can get.

I'm not good in the winter, that's for sure.  My brain doesn't work properly as soon as darkness falls.  I wish I could hibernate.

I think I either want a flatmate or want to move into a shared house.  But then it's really nice when Tom comes up and we have the flat to ourselves.  And it's nice not having to look at other people's washing up (or lack of).  Maybe I could buy a house and have a lodger, then they'd have no choice but to submit to my control freakery.  And I'd have a house.  Though given how hard I find choosing even trivial things, the prospect of house hunting is terrifying.

Working tomorrow.  After a brief period of job-loving, I'm now back into job-hating mode.  I need intellectual stimulation!  Is that too much to ask when you work for Government?

Bah, humbug.

Crap

Yet again I managed to type a whole post and then lost it in the uploading.  Waaaaaaa!

Please can you text me and identify yourself so that I can store your number in my shiny new phone.  I had them all stored in the memory of my old phone instead of the SIM.

There was more to say, but I'm sulking now.  *pout*

Christmas kitsch

Interesting article for debate here.  Only if you wanna, mind.  I've just been reminded of the shittiness of Christmas.  Been traipsing around Sheffield looking for people's presents.  If I'm honest, it was remarkably easy.  Managed to get 4 people sorted just in Waterstones.  I love my intelligent friends. :-)

Waiting for Val to arrive for a girls night, though might drag her to the party of an old church friend instead.  She was supposed to be arriving this afternoon but she stayed in Leicester to help "a friend in need".  I've started a mental list of all the people I know who it could be.  Hmmm... she set off an hour and a half ago -- could she possibly be lost?

Vanilla Blog, mmmmmm....

Might be moving soon.  My spiritual home in Sheffield have brought this out.

Nothing interesting to say, only thanks to Clurb for sorting out the binding of my lovely, shiny red thesis.  *mwah*

Fun and frolics

Right. I've taken a flexi-afternoon off work in order to Sort My Life Out™ after the last few weeks' fractured existence. Have caught up on everyone's blogs and sorted out my finances. V. good.

Tonight is Flying Teapots. Defo. I have no excuse not to go, having had a relatively chilled afternoon.

"So what have you been up to, Rosie?" I hear you ask, nay, plead. Well, in the past few weeks I've:

  • Passed my viva. May have mentioned that. Caught up with P&C round Alan's.
  • Visited Tom. May have mentioned that too. Slightly.
  • Done a week's work. (Makes a change.) Can't actually remember much of that, or what I did in the evenings. Guess I must've kept myself occupied.
  • Had Tom up to stay. He arrived on Friday afternoon and I dragged him around Sheffield until he complained. Then we went home and made a wicked curry. On Saturday we did Christmas shopping in Fopp and not really anywhere else then watched TV. On Sunday I cleared out my final box from moving and Tom put stuff up in the loft for me, as it was too dark and scary to do on my own. Then we went down to Acton.
  • From there I went to a course in Woking for this software package I use at work. It were dead boring, but I was in the family room of the lushest B&B ever, courtesy of the Civil Service. Went to Surbiton to see Martha on Tuesday and we chatted about our respective men, church (Marfs has managed to acquire a Christian boyfriend) careers and babies (her, not me). A broody Martha is a very strange thing to witness.
  • Back to Sheff on Wednesday last week. Was knackered on Thursday and Friday. Realised I'd wasted the previous week correcting something that wasn't wrong. Bloody missing data!
  • Then back to Acton on Friday night, to slob in front of the telly. He's introduced me to the genius that is Peep Show. Much fun.
  • Saturday we went on the big climate change demo in London.  Saw some Woodcraft Folkers, and some Earth Mothers holding hands and dancing in a circle.  And lots of crusty hippies with drums and whistles and placards and a man on a recumbant bike with wings holding up traffic and getting stopped by the police, who under pressure from booing hippies decided to let him carry on.  Anyway, feeling that we'd contributed sufficiently to the greater good of society, we ducked out of the speeches at the American Embassy and went for a lush Thai meal.  Then back to Acton to watch the 2nd Harry Potter movie on telly (crap), followed by the 3rd one on DVD (better).
  • Sunday Tom's housemates cooked a massive Christmas dinner and we all sat down together like a proper family, and then Tom and Tom (his housemate) argued about communism and then it was time to go home.

And now it's Monday and it's dark and time to go to Waitrose to buy lasagne cos Darsh and Ajay are coming round for dinner tomorrow.

Been busy.  V. busy.  Sick to death of bloody courses.  And bloody stats.
