Spaz

Just walked all the way home from work with my raincoat done up tight and the hood up before realising that it wasn't raining and the sky was blue.  Mnnnnnneeeeehhhhhhhh.

Things I have learnt since moving

  • It rains constantly in Sheffield.
  • Most normal people have partners and/or kids.
  • Normal people are nice, and generally good for self-esteem.
  • Physicists aren't normal or nice, but are somehow more addictive company.
  • Living alone makes you crave a partner.
  • So does having no single colleagues.
  • Leaving messages for random blokes you meet in computer shops in doesn't work.
  • Broadband is the cure for all life's woes.
  • It's very hard to meet people when you're not a student.
  • Flexi time is the most fantastic invention ever, as is the 37 hour working week.
  • The world of furniture is designed for people with cars.
  • Wilko's own brand screwdrivers are crap.
  • I actually do like computers.
  • And juggling.
  • Getting re-aquainted with old friends is most rewarding. Especially when they cook you proper Indian curry.
  • My concept of God is very similar to my Hindu friend's.
  • TLAs are impossible to resist.
  • As is conforming to the office style of e-mails:
    • Rosie,
    • Here are the statistics on the production of spam by small businesses in 2004.
    • George
  • Only physicists sign their e-mails "Cheers, ...."
  • There is a universal rule of women's football: the best players are the ones who look most like boys. I am average.
  • E-mails and blogs are a poor substitute for actually seeing your friends. :-(
  • Duck feather pillows aren't as comfy as they sound.

In other news, was good having Rob to stay.  I've just bought CDs by the Arctic Monkeys (Sheffield up-and-coming band, quite good) and We Are Scientists (not bad but not great either), and of course with his encyclopaedic knowledge of glamorous indie rock'n'roll he already knew all about them, so we compared notes.  And then I beat him at Mancala about a million times until I got bored and had to let him win so we could stop.

Not going juggling after all tonight as Darshie's invited me for curry.  Which wins hands down, I'm afraid.

My first overnight guest

Well I had meant to write an epic long update on my current life at some point today, but my brother decided to come and stay the night, which is a Good Thing as I hadn't talked to anyone all day except the woman in the newsagent's who drew attention to her cute little 3 year old daughter attempting to sweep the floor with a full sized broom.  I would have probably ended up listening to the Smiths whilst spouting angst here otherwise.  Rob (bro) quit his job as a cinema usher a couple of weeks ago and since then has been on a whirlwind tour of friends Oop North.  I'm quite flattered that I count as one. :-)

Am considering going along to Green Top for their regular Monday night trapeze/aerial/unicycling class tomorrow.  That or search out the Teapots.  I've been inspired by Timfoolery et al's cabaret show last night.  Some bloody good rope work and trapeze!  (Could have sworn the trapeze bloke was Sam, but he seemed too extroverted.)

Back in cyberspace

Hallelujah -- I'm back online!

More later... :-)
